Magnum Mentorship Singapore

Magnum Mentorship Singapore is an newly devised educational programme conceptualised by the Singapore International Photography Festival with Magnum Photos, supported by Leica Camera and conducted by internationally renowned photographers Alec Soth, Jim Goldberg and Susan Meiselas.

The programme is designed to guide and inspire participating photographers in refining their practice & creating a new body of work, in an intensive 3-month programme from July to October 2012, combining online mentorship and a 5-day practical workshop. The programme is supported by our partners, Leica Camera, who have been at the frontline of photography for nearly 100 years. Through the Oskar Barnack Award for high quality reportage photography and by presenting the work of international photographers, Leica remains committed to documenting life's hidden stories.

An exclusive group of 8 photographers will be assigned to each Magnum photographer. The participants will begin work with their assigned Magnum mentors in July 2012 with a series of online sessions administrated through SIPF web channels. Participants will have the opportunity to introduce & contextualize their work to their mentor and peer group, and work on the development of longer term goals through the structured online sessions. Participants will then travel to Singapore for a 5-day intensive, practical photographic workshop led by their Magnum mentors from 7th to 11th October 2012. Students will work alongside their designated photographer to develop their visual language and storytelling through images. The workshop will culminate in a group projection scheduled as part of the official festival program. In addition, workshop participants will have the opportunity to engage in the extensive program of SIPF, including exhibitions, discussions and presentations.

The duration of the workshop entails commitment by participants and mentors alike, and in turn offers a unique opportunity in terms of scale, in-depth assessment, discussion and development of work. The programme is recommended for professional photographers in the process of developing their practice, who could benefit from long term advice from master photographers pertaining to their works and career.
