Joking aside: has photography lost its sense of humour?

Many contemporary artists use humour as subvertive tools in their work. However, these strategies are not easily transferable to photography. This evening we will ask - does photography take itself too seriously? Or can it use the tactics of humour to be cutting and transgressive.

This evenings event is organised with the Putting On collective. Putting On is a small artists’ collective including Natasha Caruana, Daphne Plessner and Wiebke Leister, that organises variable exhibitions, interventions and public dissemination projects based on exploring the revolutionary potential of humour, folk culture and the carnivalesque. Founded in 2009 with the project headquarters located in South London, the project investigates subversive strategies as tools for commenting on contemporary social life, exploring the clown in his age-old role as masquerading fool, trickster, joker and jester from differing perspectives. The project celebrates the imagery and act of clowning, teasing and fooling around in a de-contextualized sense, by embracing documentation and art works in the form of display, publication, intervention and performance.
