Channel 4 and the Saatchi Gallery announce this year’s New Sensations Prize for UK art students graduating in 2012
18 June 2012, London: Channel 4 and The Saatchi Gallery have announced this year’s New Sensations Prize, which is open to all UK art students graduating from BA and MA courses at UK and the Republic of Ireland colleges and universities in 2012.
A longlist of 30 artists will be selected from all the entries by the Saatchi Gallery and Channel 4. A panel of judges will then choose a shortlist of 20 students who will be invited to show their work in an exhibition in London during Frieze Week in October 2012.
The judges are the artists John Stezaker and Richard Wilson; Shonagh Manson, Director of the Jerwood Charitable Foundation and Jerwood Visual Arts; Jake Miller, founder of The Approach gallery in London; Nancy Durrant, arts commissioning editor, The Times; Tabitha Jackson, Commissioning Editor, Arts, Channel 4; and Rebecca Wilson, director of the Saatchi Gallery.
From the 20 shortlisted graduates the judges will also select four finalists who will be given a bursary to make a new work to present at the exhibition. Each of the four finalists will work with Channel 4 film to make a short film about their work which will be aired in October.
The winner of the prize, chosen by the judges, will be awarded prize money to support their future artistic endeavours.
The New Sensations Prize was launched in 2007 to find and support the most imaginative and talented artists graduating in the UK. Since it was started six years ago the Prize has given young graduates many opportunities – they have sold their work, been taken on by galleries, invited to be in exhibitions both in the UK and internationally and shortlisted for other prizes as a result of their work being seen in the New Sensations exhibition.
DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES
To enter New Sensations 2012 you must be a UK or Republic of Ireland art student graduating from a BA or MA course this year. Entries, which must include your degree show works, can now be uploaded on the New Sensations site. The deadline for entries is 6pm on Sunday 8 July 2012.
