Gavin Devine is a Belfast based photographer and recent graduate of
the MFA programme from the University of Ulster.

His most recent project ‘I am another’ is rooted in a deeply personal
journey concerning the artist coming to terms with his own sexuality.
Having been brought up in a moderately religious household where
notions of attraction or desire beyond a heteronormative model were
simply not discussed, Devine’s own exploration of his personal
identity has developed into a photographic investigation into the
process of ‘coming out’ in Ireland today.

When sitting for a portrait, subjects are casually interviewed by the
artist about their experiences of growing up as ‘another’, and the
photographic results of this aural narrative silently convey the
intimate and often closely guarded emotions that surface during the
course of these dialogues.

Working most recently with an almost lost generation of older LGBT
individuals, Devine’s work highlights the difficulties and obstacles
many of his sitters had to overcome in trying to embrace their own
identities, at a time when homosexuality was still illegal in Ireland.
