Mikael Kinanen (b. 1989) is studying for Masters' degrees at Aalto University School of Art, Design and Architecture and the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts. He combines these studies in fine art and curating with an ongoing academic interest in hard-core philosophy. The artist is not a photographer per se: instead he utilizes multiple media, from art games and performances to text based artworks and finally photography.
Soma deals with the human being as the subject and object of knowledge. It is about the empirical relation man has to bodies and human subjects, which in turn constricts our views on humanity itself. The series was made as a bachelor's thesis in fine art.

Docile Bodies is an attempt to show male bodies outside the normative constructions inherent in the photographic constructions of traditional masculinity. It works with the articulation of gender through visual codes and deals with the possibilities of male self-redefinition and its constraints.
